We welcome submissions of papers and/or visual essays to be considered for inclusion in a forthcoming special issue of Visual Communication on the theme of ‘Information Environments’ to be published in June 2009.

Submissions are sought from a broad range of disciplines that explore the way in which information is conveyed within physical and/or virtual environments. This includes the ways in which we send, receive, mediate or understand information in:

the use of new forms of technologies and computing
communities of interest and social networking
architecture and the built environment
document design
display and design of information in broadcasting and media displays
signage systems
conventional printed forms (e.g. books, magazines)
typography
teaching and learning environments
fine art practice (e.g. digital arts, site specific installations)
advertising and communication design
popular culture as well as from cultural, historical and theoretical perspectives

Essays should be 5,000 words and must include an abstract of 150 words, 3 line author’s biography, institutional affiliation, contact details including email.

Visual essays may be an entirely visual piece or can combine image and writing. The length of these essays varies (usually between 6 and 12 pages).
