A conference organized by Germanys Ministry of Education and Research with a main focus on Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) in Berlin, Jan, 2012. a term, invented to paraphrase technologies that target home settings, to better deal with the constraints of aging by e-care solutions, care-robots, sensor-devices, smart-houses, etc.

Everybody seemed to talk about »the user« and age-friendly »usability« but the focus on this conference was definitely not on design: only very few interesting and innovative examples of interface design and interaction design became visible. Most presented projects had an engineering, medical or business focus and mentioned design issue rather in side nodes. The poster session gained a lot of interest but the setting and duration didn´t meet the demands.

A good event for meeting the major german players within the AAL field, but not an excessive inspiring experience regarding presentations and keynotes. Recommendation to the organizers: cut the conference fee in half and make this event more accessible for the rest of us.

Workshop zur qualitativen Bildungs- und Sozialforschung (Magdeburg)

Liebe Wissenschaftler,
diesen Workshop kann ich empfehlen. Da kann man mit wenig Erfahrung in qualitativen Methoden viel von den anderen lernen, insbesondere wenn man sich als "aktiver" Teilnehmer anmeldet. Dann kann man das eigene Datenmaterial vorstellen und die lieben Sozialwissenschaftler nehmen es auseinander!

Das "Zentrum für Sozialweltforschung und Methodenentwicklung (ZSM):
Gesundheit- Profession- Medien" richtet am 10./11. Februar 2012 zum 15. Mal den Bundesweiten Workshop zur qualitativen Bildungs- und Sozialforschung in Magdeburg aus.

Der Workshop bietet in 16 verschiedenen Arbeitsgruppen WissenschaftlerInnen ein Forum, in dem sie nach dem Vorbild von Forschungswerkstätten unter fachlich kompetenter Anleitung an eigenem oder fremdem Datenmaterial aus aktuellen Projekten mittels qualitativer Methoden arbeiten können. Neben den methodischen und methodologischen Fragen stehen die praktischen Probleme des Forschungsalltags im Zentrum der gemeinsamen Werkstattarbeit.

Mobility Shifts

I don´t want to miss giving a short review on last years »Mobility Shifts« Conference at Parsons New School. Subtitled »an international Future Of Learning Summit« The well organized event assembled an interesting crowd of people that are practically and theoretically investigating on the emerging opportunities that mobile communication technologies offer for the field of education. The conference program was devided in three main sections: »Learning Without a School?«, »Digital Fluencies for a Mobile World« and »Learning from Global Digital Learning Projects«.

Many participants and speakers originated in the field of Design but a lot of other disciplines where present on stage and in the audience. Among them some heavyweights like Lew Manovich or Henry Jenkins. The way how interests, people and research fields merged in the various sessions was a highlight and showed how deeply the topic is rooted in basic societal structures. The expansive variety of approaches to the basic topic revealed interesting starting points for further deepening investigations.

Unfortunately the largely dispersed setting of conference and only few common events made it impossible get a feeling for the conference crowd as a whole, which would have been worth. The relevance of the subject and the interesting speakers line-up deserves to gain a second issue in any case.

6th Dresden International Doctoral Colloquium: Architectural Aesthetics Building Composition City Design

The 6th Annual Dresden International Doctoral Colloquium provides an opportunity for doctoral students from various disciplines related to the field of architectural aesthetics to exchange ideas about the current state of their research and receive critical input from a panel of professors and fellow students in their field.

While issues of function, construction and technology in architecture and urban design are established subjects in teaching and research, the central core of architecture and city design – form and space and its effect – are rarely addressed in a systemic and scientific manner. This colloquium is a forum for students in these fields. The spectrum of topics ranges from broader theoretical and methodological issues to the specifics of practical applications in architecture and urban design. Students in the fields of philosophy, environmental psychology, art history, architectural theory and history, architectural composition and urban design are invited to participate.

Regardless of the state of progress – from the beginnings of an idea to nearly completed dissertations, speakers will present the principal theme, a problem description, the major issues and hypotheses, the goals of the dissertation, the applied methodology and further steps planned towards completion.

This oral presentation with accompanying visuals shall be 15 minutes followed by a 30 minute allotment for discussion. Participation will be limited to 25 doctoral students.

Submission of a 500 word abstract by February 24, 2012.
Notification of acceptance by March 09, 2012.

"Design Promoviert" in Weimar! Call for Papers und Teilnahmeaufruf

Das Kolloquium bietet Promovierenden im Design eine Gelegenheit, ihr Forschungsthema unter Gleichgesinnten zur Diskussion zu stellen. Erfahrene Designforscher werden eingeladen, uns mit hilfreichen Kommentaren zur Seite zu stehen. Vorträge zu erfolgreich abgeschlossenen Promotionen im Designbereich sollen die Veranstaltung abrunden.

KOSTEN
Damit wir die Kosten für Essen und Getränke vor Ort decken können, erheben wir einen Unkostenbeitrag von 15€ pro Teilnehmer. Die Anmeldung ist erst mit Eingang des Unkostenbeitrags abgeschlossen.
Teilnahme und Anmeldung
Das Kolloquium richtet sich insbesondere an alle Designpromovierenden und solche, die es werden wollen. Interessierte, die gern vortragen möchten, können ihre Kurzdarstellung von 500 Wörtern (plus Literaturverweise) bis zum 12.März 2012 auf www.design-promoviert.de/kolloquium hochladen. Dort ist auch die Teilnahmeanmeldung möglich. Auch internationale Designpromovierende sind herzlich eingeladen zu partizipieren.
In der Kurzdarstellung sollen die folgenden Fragen beantwortet werden:
• Was ist, ganz allgemein, der aktuelle Stand der Forschungsarbeit?
• Was ist das Feld, in dem geforscht wird oder werden soll?
• Was ist das Forschungsproblem (nicht nur das Designproblem),
das Anlass zur Forschung gibt?
• Wie lautet die Forschungsfrage (nicht nur die Designfrage)?
• Welche Untersuchungsmethoden werden/wurden verwendet bzw. sollen benutzt werden,
um diese Frage zu beantworten (in Form von Design- und Beobachtungspraktiken)?
• Wie sind die forscherische und gestalterische Praxis verbunden, welchen Einfluss haben sie aufeinander?
• Wo gibt’s noch Probleme/Unsicherheiten bzgl. derer man sich Feedback im Kolloquium erhofft?
Jeder Vortragende hat 15 Minuten zur Präsentation und 15 Minuten zur Diskussion des Beitrags. Die konstruktive Diskussion des Themas steht im Vordergrund.

ÜBERGEORDNETE VORTRÄGE
Zusätzlich können Vorschläge für übergeordnete Vorträge über Designpromotion in Deutschland eingereicht werden. Diese könnten beispielsweise Methoden, Prozessen und Strategien zum erfolgreichen promovieren im Design beschreiben oder Erfahrungsberichte über gute bzw. schlechte Rahmenbedingungen an Hochschulen sowie institutionelle Voraussetzungen für eine Promotion vorstellen. Besonders sind wir interessiert an Vorträgen zur Finanzierung von Dissertationen im Design-Bereich.

PEER REVIEW
Wir wollen nicht nur die Diskussionskultur, sondern auch das kritische Lesen unter Designforschern üben. Deswegen werden alle Beiträge einem Review-Verfahren – ebenfalls unter Design-Doktoranden – unterzogen. Das Review-Ergebnis dient hier zu besserer Vorbereitung auf die Präsentation und nicht als Ausschlusskriterium.
Für den Review sind u. a. folgende inhaltliche Aspekte ausschlaggebend:
Das vorgestellte Projekt sollte den Anspruch und den Umfang eines Promotionsthemas haben. Das heißt, es sollte einerseits groß genug sein, um eine mehrjährige Forschungsarbeit zu rechtfertigen. Es sollte andererseits neues grundsätzliches Wissen auf seinem Gebiet erarbeiten. Kürzere Entwurfsprojekte sollten deswegen in den Kontext einer entsprechend größeren Forschungsfrage gestellt werden.
Das Thema sollte ein Designforschungsthema sein, das heißt, für das designerische Handeln relevant sein. Es sollte sich also nicht nur um eine rein praktische Designarbeit handeln, sondern deutlich eine Forschungsfrage behandeln.

Wir sind Freunde von Forschung-durch-Design; der Forschungsanteil im Design soll jedoch deutlich werden. Entsprechend sollte ein Beitrag Antworten und Hinweise auf die Problemstellung, die Forschungsfrage, die verwendeten Methoden und Schlussfolgerungen geben können.

Call for papers: Wolverhampton 4th Annual Research Student Conference in Art & Design

The conference, which takes place on the 14th May 2012, is intended as a forum for discussion, an informal survey of current PhD research and a social occasion for the facilitation of networking and exchange amongst PhD students in Art, Design, Craft, Performance and Social and Critical Theory. There is no over-arching theme to the conference this year and one of our aims is to let themes emerge from the submission process engendering new debates and discussions.

First Call for Participation

DesignInquiry‘s second stop on a worldwide design expedition.

In 2006, Berlin, Germany was designated by UNESCO as the first European City Of Design. From a damaged city, Berlin has evolved into a multi-faceted melting-pot, with all its clashes and conflicts, new beginnings and fresh perspectives. It is unique in its ability to adapt to difficulties and experiment with the given. The radical changes within the city are visible everywhere you go and its constant flux draws artists and designers from all over the world, inviting them to experiment with it and create something new, fill the empty spaces. Berlin is becoming more and more a city of design participation, grassroots activism and DIY-initiatives. Berlin Design seldom fits a fixed category of design but rather defines itself in-between disciplines drawing from the international influence and diverse backgrounds of its protagonists. It is a place where new tendencies in design are taken up very quickly, although they might not have been initiated here. Seemingly disparate ideas and approaches get entangled and (re-)mixed into something new.

In this spirit we invite you to participate in an experimental week to investigate and explore the design city, collaborate with its designers and develop and exchange ideas with international colleagues and friends. The notion that design practice, and the presence of designers, can alter the trajectory of a city for the better is an assumption that beseeches exploration and testing. Meeting Berlin‘s flora and fauna, getting used to its habits and communicating with its inhabitants will be the core of DesignInquiry-slash-Berlin. We are there as designers, artists, makers, exploring this design town.

The Design Research Lab is collaborating with DesignInquiry on this experimental workshop-format that will take place in 2012. Read more on their website.

We are pleased to announce this year's Swiss Design Network Conference 2012 in Lugano. This one day conference focuses on the dialectical relationship between design and disruptive ideas, practices and innovations. “Disruptive Interaction” aims to investigate and discuss the capability, responsibility and agency of design in areas of disruptive change.
